France: The Number 1 Country With Best Sustainable Food System In 2018

In accordance with rankings from the food sustainability index in 2018, France reaches the top list for the most sustainable food system country in the world.

France’s intrusive measures to engage in food waste, advance healthy lifestyles and follow eco-farming techniques which helped it to reaches the top ranking of nations.

The Netherlands, Canada, Finland and Japan rounded out the top five, and Rwanda has the highest score among low-income countries in an index by the Economist Intelligence Unit and the Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition Foundation.

In accordance with the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, universally, a third of all food produced is wasted every year, which amounts to a loss of almost $1 trillion.

Some critics indicate this is not only unethical in a world where hunger levels are increasing, but also environmentally devastating.

Martin Koehring, the index’s author said, “France has been in the vanguard of policies and measures to reduce such losses.”

In 2016, France introduced legislation demanding supermarkets to redistribute leftover food to charities as part of a set of proposals published in 2015 against food waste.

Koehring said, “Each year, customer in France waste about 67.2kg of food per person contrast with 95.1kg in the United States, 87.1kg in Belgium and 78.2kg in Canada.”

France is also forcing ahead with the agroecology policy, which its agriculture ministry says “aims to shift agriculture towards the objective of combining economic, environmental and social performance.”

According to Koehring, by 2025 the ministry expects that most French farmers will sign on to the concept, including practices such as rotating crops to advance soil fertility and slashing reliance on chemical fertilizer.

He told the Thomson Reuters Foundation that France is displaying that “improvements in agricultural performance should not come at the expense of environmental and social conditions.”

France’s Vision to Food Sustainability System

Assured with the importance of food and agriculture in accomplishing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), France has distributed its vision of the transition towards sustainable food systems. At the Summit, the Minister declared France’s participation in two international multi-stakeholder coalitions:

  • The coalition for agroecology; an approach that France promotes in its territory and in the world, particularly through its support for the Great Green Wall Accelerator in the Sahel
  • The coalition for school meals; in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) in order to guarantee one nutritious meal a day for school children everywhere in the world.

French’s Challenges About Food Sustainability

  • Ensure the economic resilience of the farm

The global population explosion has led to an ever-increasing demand for production.

Therefore, in order to meet demand, we must adjust our economic model to enable farmers to produce more efficiently while maintaining sufficient profitability to live a decent life.

However, in the context of increasingly fierce competition in the free market economy, especially from Eastern European countries, this is a real challenge.

Consumer needs have become more and more urgent, forcing agricultural practices to shift to animal welfare, chemical-free and other aspects.

  • Adaptation and contribution to environmental issues to limit greenhouse gas emissions 

The world is facing global climate destruction, making weather patterns increasingly unpredictable.

French agriculture is being affected by these drastic changes, but it is also listed as one of the main pathogenic factors and must be adjusted to contribute to the greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction plan.
