Public transit is a system of transport for passengers available for use by the general public like you. The transportations typically managed on a schedule, operated on established routes, and that charge you a posted fee for each trip. We’re pretty sure that you have stepped into a public transport at least once in your life, and if you were those people who use public transit frequently, then good for you. A single person who regularly drive their own car around 20mi can reduce annual CO2 emissions by 4,800 pounds per year, just by convrting into public transit. We’re going to do some math to further prove our point, so please bear with us.
A train would take, at best, 1,500 passengers in one go. Trains usually arrive for every 5 minutes, which means there would be 12 trains every hour. 1,500 passengers multiplied by 12 trains per hour equals 18,000 people transported per hour. Trains emit around 41g of carbon for each passenger, that makes 738kg of carbon per hour in total. Things would be different if 50% of them took private vehicles, that means 9,000 cars are on the road. Each car emits around 171g of carbon per kilometer traveled, 9,000 cars multiplied by 171g of carbon equals 1,539kg.
So there is about 1,539kg of carbon emission that 9,000 cars produced for each kilometer traveled. We can’t just assume that each car just drove around 1km per day however, so let’s assume those 9,000 cars drove around 15km, and that’s already 23,085kg of carbon emission went to the air. So now we got 738kg against 23,085kg, that’s a ridiculously large gap of difference. With this, perhaps trains are always more carbon-friendly than cars, further proves the point where public transit should become one of the solution for climate change.
The use of public transit could also help to reduce the congestion of traffic, it means to reduce the number of cars on the road and prevent traffic jams. Think about it, while some people travels by public transit, which makes traffic less congested, automobile traveling in the same area will achieve greater fuel efficiency, it’s a win-win solution for each party. Beside, with congested traffic, traffic jam is prone to happen. Which means people will spend more time in traffic, resulting even more carbon emission and low fuel efficiency.
For those who wished to do their part on climate change actions, taking public transit regularly is a splendid option. This option exceeds the efficiency of other energy-saving household activities, such as using energy efficient light bulbs or adjusting thermostats. Public transit could also help people to save energy and even money, and think about it, traffics are prone to accidents while trains are safer. Less congestion, faster commutes, more convenience, higher productivity and lower emissions, simply put: public transit builds better lives.
The Massive Public Transit Use in Japan
Public transport is a crucial importance in Japan, it ties together cities and metropolitan areas all across the country. Connecting many different sectors in cities such as businesses, households, offices or retail, restaurants, and other places of employment and entertainment. It is an important asset for the country’s economy, providing mobility for the entire population. Speaking of the Japanese population, 90% of Tokyo residents took the train to travel. Perhaps the other prefecture also has a majority of public transit user as it is their preference.
Japanese people prefer railway transportation as their mode of transport, allow them to travel between major cities and metropolitan areas. Their option in railway services is also diverse, they have regular commuter trains, and also the Shinkansen (the bullet train), which they hold pride in. The public transit lines even connecting Japan’s suburban areas with its urban centers, allowing individuals to move away from the hustling and bustling city centers to more spacious and affordable accommodation in the outskirts.
Japanese commuter train is so loved, the train is oftenly full of people during rush hour when people are going to their office to work and going home from work (this phenomenon happened particularly in Tokyo). In the major cities of Japan, roads are usually narrow with parking options that are both limited and expensive, perhaps this is why cars are the least mode of transport here. Even if the public transit wasn’t an option, people prefer to use bicycles, public buses, and taxi to get around on a day-to-day basis.
