So in this article, we’ll talk about the plot and the message from the show.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’s Plot

If you are familiar with the MARVEL Cinematic Universe, you might realize that the event in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier took place after the movie Avengers: Endgame. In the movie, Tony Stark A.K.A Iron Man sacrifice his life to save the universe and restore half of lives that were lost. While Steve Rogers A.K.A Captain America decided to retire as a superhero and pass the shield to his former partner, Sam Wilson which goes by the name The Falcon, an airborne superhero with a cybernetic wings attached to his back.

The problem shown in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is that Sam Wilson (played by Anthony Mackie) refused to take over the mantle as he felt that he’s not yet capable to be the next Captain America. Beside Sam, there is also Bucky Barnes (played by Sebastian Stan) who has a problem of his own. After the big fight with Thanos, Bucky decided to live a normal life, but his past life still remain to haunt him, a past where he is a brainwashed assassin sent to eliminate innocent people that goes by the name of The Winter Soldier.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier also introduces us with a few notable new characters. In response to Sam’s refusal to be the next Captain America, the government of America appoint their best soldier in the military, John Walker (played by Wyatt Russell) to be the new Captain America complete with the shield and attire. During the show, both John and Sam (partnered with Bucky) compete to resolve a conflict started by a terrorist group who called themselves “The Flag Smashers” with Karli Morgenthau as a leader (played by Erin Kellyman).

The Message Behind The Falcon and The Winter Soldier

The fans are getting more hooked to The Falcon and The Winter Soldier as John Walker does unspeakable thing in episode 4, where he took a life with his shield. His action made the fans question his capability to replace Steve Rogers, some fans even shower the character with hate, it made us realize just how difficult it is to carry on the symbol. John Walker clearly lacking in integrity, he is quite arrogant and blinded with fame, recognition, and public attention, so much so that he don’t have the proper notion about justice, like Steve Rogers does.

Now let’s talk about The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’s main villain, Karli Morgenthau and The Flag Smashers. It is an anti-nationalist terorrist group lead by Karli who fight for a valid common interest, a world without borders in which newly-declared refugees can easily find homes, although her actions surely can’t be justified. This is what makes peacekeeping such a difficult task, a group of people with common interest and struggle emerged out of disatifaction, and will do anything in order to change that for the better (or worse).

World without border sounds wonderful, it would help so many people who seeks refugee, this is a problem that actually happened in real life like Rohingyans in Myanmar. So at the season finale of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson delivered a powerful speech towards peacekeeping initiative bodies. “I’m still here. No super serum. No blonde hair or blue eyes. The only power I have is that I believe we can do better”, that is how Sam Wilson felt as he become the next Captain America that carries Steve Roger’s will

Sam actually cared about those who has nowhere else to go, that he refuse to call those people as “refugee” or “terrorist”, he believed in equal treatment regardless of status. He believed that we actually do had the power to make a change, “But the question is, who was in the room with you when you’re making those decisions? Is it the people you’re going to impact? Or is it just more people like you?”, he retort that the current peacekeeping efforts was just for a publicity stunts which does not actually cared about the people they’re trying to help.

Sam Wilson ended his speech by saying “A few people have just as much power as an insane God or misguided teenager. The question you have to ask yourself is how are you going to use it?”. Peacekeeping efforts needs to serve everyone involved the same amount of impact, for both the giver and receiver. If not, someone might took matter with their own hand. Karli was just a 19-years old girl, and yet she lead The Flag Smashers with a lot of followers on her back helping her overthrow the government, if you’re asking why, try to think of her cause.
